5. Implementation
Both types of observation cycles end with an implementation stage. The learner in either observation method will use input from observation notes, the post-observation conversation, and personal reflection to implement new strategies and practices that resulted from the observation experience. Implementation of new knowledge and skills occurs on the job in the authentic professional context.
It should be expected that the learner may not be immediately proficient in implementation of new knowledge and skills. It might take several performances with constructive feedback to get comfortable using new practices. This is why someone knowledgeable should conduct an implementation observationâwhether it is the partner in peer observation or a coach or practitioner leader for the learning-by-observing methodâand provide feedback to help the learner refine skills in practice. In this way, the observation cycle continues until the learner is proficient in targeted skills and practices.
